BEAT Bladder Cancer Australia and PCNA: Partnering for Better Patient Support
By: Sarah Begley. Nurse Educator and PCNA Committee Member

In June this year, I had the pleasure of meeting Adam Lynch, CEO of BEAT Bladder Cancer Australia. Adam generously shared his personal story — his wife died from advanced bladder cancer several years ago, and he spoke powerfully about the role palliative care nurses played in their journey. For Adam, nurses were the bridge — providing crucial information, guidance, and support during the most difficult time of their lives.

Motivated by this experience, BEAT has developed a range of information and support resources for both patients with advanced bladder cancer and the nurses who care for them. This includes educational modules specifically for nurses, aimed at building confidence and understanding in managing advanced bladder cancer.

During our conversations with the BEAT team, we identified a real gap in symptom management education for urology-related issues — and out of this, a plan emerged: in 2026, we’ll be collaborating to deliver a series of webinars focusing on urological symptom management in palliative care.

In the meantime, I encourage you to explore the free resources already available on the BEAT Bladder Cancer Australia website. These are practical tools you can share with families and carers facing advanced bladder cancer.
