Join us for another PCNA interactive workshop exploring the realities of palliative care when complexity, ethics, and compassion intersect. “Navigating When Palliative Care Doesn’t Follow a Rule Book”.

Through two real-world case studies, this session will unpack the challenges clinicians face when there’s no clear pathway forward.

There are two sessions within this workshop. For each session, the program will feature a case study delivered through a series of short presentations, interspersed with interactive breakout sessions and facilitator-led discussions.

It’s a fast-paced and highly engaging format designed to encourage participation and reflection.

Case Study 1

Caring for a 70-year-old woman with a brain tumour. Navigating travel for treatment, managing difficult symptoms, and engaging family carers through relationship challenges.

Case Study 2

Complex decision making and advocacy for patients living with mental illness at end of life: exploring ethical and moral distress in the care of a 49-year-old man with schizophrenia and his family in a palliative care unit.

Presenters:

Fred Miegel – A clinician who established the Palliative Care Service for Central Australia more than 30 years ago. Originally an oncology nurse, Fred returned to clinical work six years ago and continues to work alongside “awe-inspiring people,” bringing deep insight and humanity to his practice.

Holly Pitt – A compassionate senior nurse with over 17 years of palliative care experience across inpatient, outpatient, consultancy and community settings. Holly is committed to advancing education, research, leadership, and equitable access to quality care.
