The broad implications on palliative care, dignity and pain management of labeling a client as "drug-seeking" or a "addicted."
Practical aspects of medication safety and pain management for these clients- especially within a community palliative care context.
A little bit about Joan:
Joan Ryan is a Palliative Care Nurse Consultant at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney.
She has vast clinical experience across multiple settings and pioneered services for in patient, community, consultant teams and recently at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse Cancer Centre.
Joan has a commitment to improving equity and access to Palliative Care in poorly resourced nations and within vulnerable populations within Australia. She has provided education in Nauru, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Timor Leste and India. Joan recognises the broadening diversity of cultural minorities, the homeless, poverty, and climate change impacting provision of Palliative Care.
Joan was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2019, for her contribution to Palliative Care Nursing education and advocacy.
A little bit about Dr. Mohamudally:
Anthoulla Mohamudally migrated from her native London in 2001 She completed FRACP advance training in Palliative Medicine in Sydney. Anthoulla’s first specialist position was with Territory Palliative Care NT from 2009 to 2014 caring for paediatric and adult patients in regional and remote settings. Anthoulla returned to Sydney in 2014 as a specialist with HammondCare and with a multidisciplinary team implemented a Breathlessness Program.
Anthoulla was a specialist at Royal North Shore Hospital before joining RPA Hospital in 2021. She runs a weekly ILD-Palliative Care clinic in parallel with the RPA ILD service. With the team she is conducting research in identifying needs and facilitating palliative care referrals for patients with ILD.
She is a mum to a chocolate labrador (and 3 teenage sons).
