When should palliative care become part of the conversation for someone living with Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s disease is often recognised for its movement-related symptoms, but its impact extends well beyond motor function. From complex non-motor symptoms to changing care needs, Parkinson’s disease and related conditions can present significant challenges for patients, families and the healthcare professionals supporting them.
In this FREE PCNA webinar, Fiona Roscoe, Clinical Nurse Specialist with Parkinson's WA, will explore the important role of palliative care in supporting people living with Parkinson’s disease and atypical parkinsonian syndromes.
Facilitated by Kirsty Norris, the session will draw on Fiona's extensive experience in Parkinson's nursing and palliative care to explore how nurses can recognise changing needs, support symptom management and identify opportunities for earlier palliative care involvement.
The discussion will consider the differences between Parkinson's disease and atypical parkinsonism, including why people living with atypical conditions may experience more complex palliative care needs earlier in their illness.
Fiona will also explore important clinical considerations, including medication safety, the significance of timely medication administration, advance care planning and supporting patients, families and carers as conditions progress.
With a focus on holistic, person-centred care, the session will highlight how integrating palliative care principles alongside neurological care can support quality of life, informed decision-making and improved care experiences.
This webinar aims to explore:
The key motor and non-motor features of Parkinson’s disease and how they differ from atypical parkinsonian syndromes.
Recognising changing palliative care needs and identifying opportunities for earlier involvement.
Symptom management and the role of palliative care throughout the disease trajectory.
Medication considerations, including timely administration, medication safety and working collaboratively with prescribing clinicians.
Advance care planning and supporting patients, families and carers through a holistic, person-centred approach.
Designed for palliative care nurses and other healthcare professionals, this session will provide practical clinical insights to strengthen knowledge and confidence in caring for people living with Parkinson’s disease and related conditions.
This is a FREE webinar, open to all healthcare professionals.
